Book Report for Tuseday with Morrie

“Do you have a remarkable teacher?" If someone is asked like this, how many people would say "yes"? In Korea, a student meet more than 12teachers during their school days. However, only few people keep in touch with their teachers as they become older. Most of the students are more interested in their friends and as they become an adult, they are too busy with their own work and life to think about their old teachers. I've already met about 15 teachers, including teachers at the institution, but I lost contact with all of them.
Alike most of other people, Mitch Albom, the author and the narrator at the same time, failed to keep in touch with his old professor, Morrie Schwartz. Mitch introduced his parents to his favorite professor Morrie at his graduation and gave a briefcase as a present. He promised to keep in touch with him. Mitch dreamed of being a famous musician but kept fail. At the same time, his favorite uncle died of pancreatic cancer at the age of forty-four. After his uncle's funeral, Mitch suddenly felt as if the time is running out. He gave his dream up and gpt back to school. After he got the master's degree in journalism, he became a sports writer. Soon he became famous and
professional in his field and earned a lot of money. He married a woman named Janine but he kept concentrating on working hard instead of having his family. One day, while he was watching TV late night, he saw his favorite professor on "Nightline". Morrie had ALS. He could no longer dancer nor swim. He had to use wheelchair and needed other person's help to move. He already gave his lecture and had a "living funeral" with his family and close friends. Mitch flew to Boston to meet his dying professor. They started their final project on every Tuesdays. The subject was 'life'. They talked about love, family, forgiving, community and death. As time past, Morrie became weaker and the class got shorter. The last class only took about few minutes. Mitch finally cried after the last class. He promised his professor to come and visit to talk with him at his grave on Tuesday. They called each other the "Tuesday person". At the end, Morrie died and that was Mitch's graduation.
For me, the most interesting subject was the fear of aging. These days, I was a little bit afraid of getting older because soon I'm going to be an adult and I would have to live by my self. Also as I get older, I would become weaker and less active. I was afraid of all the responsibilities and becoming an independent person. I couldn't think of any good point of getting older. However, Mitch said "Aging is not just decay, you know. It's growth. It's more than the negative that you're going to die, it's also the positive that you understand you're going to die, and that you live a better life because of it". He was right. If I don't get older anymore, I won't be able to learn more about life. I would have to stay in the thoughts of teenager and there will be no more development in my life. Morrie also said "If you're always battling against getting old, you're always going to be unhappy because it will happen anyhow". Not only aging but also every other things are like this. If the problem is not going to changed by my anxiety, it would be better to forget about it and just accept it because it will happen anyhow.
While I read through this book, I envied professor Morrie his serene attitude and mind. If I am going to die in few month or even in few weeks, I won't be able to stay calm. I would keep crying and complaining about my life. Also instead of meeting my friends or relatives and study about life and
world or society, I would eat as much as I can, buy things that I wanted to buy as many as I can and try to do things only for my self. I hope I can do what Morrie did when I get older and going to die soon.
I felt pity for Mitch because he couldn't talk about his family or his own life to Morrie after all. I think Morrie is the best person to talk because he is wise enough and considerate of other person's feeling. I think he is one of the people who is able to understand Mitch and share his feelings.
Although I've already met lots of teachers, I still haven't met a teacher who I can total depend on and talk what I want and this is why I think Mitch Albon is very lucky. I really hope to meet a teacher who I can keep in touch with through my life and talk without feeling awkward.
